LYNN - The inbound lane of the commuter rail was tied up for nearly two hours Thursday when a piece of maintenance equipment derailed at the Central Square MBTA platform.
"There was a piece of equipment they were taking up to Beverly for the tie replacement project up there," MBTA Spokesman Joe Pesaturo said. "It is not impacting service because we've been able to use the other (outbound) track. We have every expectation to have it re-railed and out of the way by the time the afternoon commute begins. It shouldn't be an issue."
The derailment occurred shortly before 2 p.m., when a loud bang reverberated from the downtown area.
A crew of 10-12 men used a blowtorch and a crow bar for more than an hour before freeing the equipment at 3:40 p.m.
The incident did not impact the evening commute.
