The Edgewood City Council has voted unanimously to oppose the proposed Central Florida Commuter Rail plan. This vote follows a presentation by the Florida Department of Transportation and the Orange County Road Department and representatives of Ax the Tax to the City Council two weeks ago.
The City Council President, Gary Heath, declared that the proposed commuter rail plan would "destroy Edgewood and Orange County" if approved. Councilman Jim Bozeman stated that commuter rail was clearly a "boondoggle" and that there was nothing about the project that was worthy of public support. Council member Judy Beardslee stated that the citizens of Edgewood that had contacted the council members were "78% opposed and that was just the emails."
The City Council also authorized the city attorney to report on the legal standing of the City of Edgewood to challenge commuter rail in court.
Mayor Michael Teague, although not a member of the city council, voiced his strong opposition to the commuter rail proposal and announced plans to attend the next MetroPlan Orlando meeting to voice the City's opposition.
Also authorized was an effort to contact all Edgewood residents to encourage them to immediately contact all Orange County Commissioners and Mayor Crotty of their opposition to commuter rail.
"This was a home run for the taxpayers tonight," stated Ax the Tax Chairman Doug Guetzloe, who joined local residents in opposing the commuter rail boondoggle. "This is the beginning of the end for the commuter rail disaster."
Orange County Soil & Water Conservation Supervisor Sally Baptiste thanked the commission for their leadership.
The City Clerk was directed to forward the resolution to all federal transportation agencies as well as the Central Florida Congressional & Legislative Delegation.
